Research Policy



As part of its mission, the St Louis Genealogical Society “promotes family history research by providing education and research opportunities.” To fulfill this portion of its mission statement, StLGS has adopted the following research policy.

The St. Louis Genealogical society will do limited genealogical and family history research, as outlined in these guidelines:

Research volunteers will look up one name in any one of the following materials. The cost for this research is $5.00 per item for members and $10.00 for non-members.

Census Indexes

St. Louis City (1850, 1860, 1870)

Missouri (1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930)


City Directories

St. Louis City (1820–1980, some years missing)

St. Louis County (1893–1979, some years missing)

[Note: A City Directory search is limited to one name in up to three volumes (three different years).]

Requests for this service must use a separate copy of the Research Request Form for each individual to be researched. This form is also available at our office and at the St. Louis County Library Special Collections Department. Letters to the office requesting this service must include a completed copy of the Research Request Form for each individual to be researched and a non-refundable check made payable to “St. Louis Genealogical Society.” Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE).

Requests for broader research in the area are not undertaken by our volunteer staff. StLGS is happy to provide you with a list of genealogical researchers in the area who provide this service for a fee.
