Office Resources
In addition to serving as the Society’s business center, the office also contains a number of resources which may assist our members and friends in their family history research.
Audio Tapes
The Society has a collection of
cassette tapes of lectures from various genealogical conferences. These may be used in the Reading Room at the Society office.
CDs
Also in the reading room is a growing collection of
data CDs. These may be used within the office for personal family history research. Please present your driver’s license to the librarian on duty to obtain a CD for use in the classroom.
Classroom
A portion of the office is equipped as a classroom facility. It includes an instructor computer with a projector and six student PCs.
Film/Fiche
The Society has an extensive collection of records on
microfilm, as well as some data on
microfiche. There are several film/fiche readers in the office for use by our office volunteers and patrons.
Reading Room
The
reading room at the office serves primarily as a resource for our volunteers to work on projects and to respond to member inquiries. (The Society’s main research collection is at the St. Louis County Library.) This collection focuses on the St. Louis area and the surrounding counties in Missouri and Illinois, as well as general research aids and sources for selected ethnic groups of significance in St. Louis.
Reference Materials
The Society owns a number of unique genealogical
reference materials that are maintained in the St. Louis Genealogical Society office. All of these materials are available to the public at our office during our regular office hours.
Software
Each of our classroom computers is equipped with several of the more popular
genealogical software programs. Patrons may “test drive” these programs at the office, to help in deciding which program they wish to use at home.
Trading Post
The
Trading Post is the Society’s re-sell shop. Patrons may donate unwanted genealogical materials to the Trading Post, which will then make them available to other researchers. This may be just the place to find that needed resource at a very affordable price.
Vertical Files
A unique asset of the Society is its collection of archival materials housed in
vertical files. These are arranged by the primary surname of each family. Each file may contain a variety of items on one or more families of that surname. A surname cross-index is available to assist in finding materials.
