German mercenary troops served in the American colonies from 1776 to 1784. Many were from the area in modern Germany called Hesse-Kassel; hence, they came to be called Hessians. There were four battalions of the grenadier brigade; they served in New York and New Jersey at first and later in Pennsylvania. Before the Revolutionary War was over, they were employed throughout areas of the South as well.

This book contains lists of the men with additional information on their ages, military standing, and places of origin. There are several pages of explanation written in German but there are also pages in English with directions for reading the lists that make up the bulk of the book.
