As more and more people have become interested in genealogy, the Internet has exploded with sites to lure them in many directions. What has been missing for a good many years, however, is a basic guide to doing genealogy correctly using information found online. This book aims to fill that gap.

What will you find inside?

Beginning with some standard genealogical techniques, the author explains how you can do good genealogical research by using both the Internet and local resources. She works in short chapters, explaining terms, offering suggestions, and giving many websites and book resources as examples. The book provides a nice introduction for beginners on how to find the best of what is available on the Internet, but it is also a good refresher for the experienced genealogist.

How is the book formatted?

Fifteen chapters are broken into smaller sub-topics. Beginning with “Click Into Your Past,” the book works through getting started, working with specific record sets, sharing with others, finding records from other countries, and publishing what you find. The author uses four distinct graphics for highlighting answers to common questions, important websites, urgent warnings, and handy tips. The sections containing this information are shaded with a soft gray background so they stand out on the page. In the last chapter, the author presents five specific genealogical research dilemmas and shows how they were solved. Appendix A is a list of additional resources and Appendix B has four-generation charts on some of the families from the last chapter. There is an index at the end.
