The St. Louis Genealogical Society hosts many events throughout the year.
The society’s general meetings are held monthly (except for April, the month of our Family History Conference, and December) at the St. Louis County Library Headquarters. Most meetings throughout the year are held on the second Tuesday of the month from 7:00–9:00 p.m. During the winter months of January, February, and March, however, we hold our meetings on Saturday morning from 10:00 a.m.–12:00 noon. This is to accommodate our members who do not wish to drive at night during the winter.
All society meetings are free and open to the public. Each meeting opens with announcements and introductory remarks followed by a lecture presentation by a featured speaker. Please check our calendar for the complete schedule of meeting times and topics.
The Annual Family History Conference
Each year since 1970, the society has hosted an all-day Family History Conference (FHC), held each spring. Formerly called the Annual Fair, it has historically been the largest such single-day event in the Midwest. The FHC typically features one or more nationally-recognized speakers, several outstanding local speakers, a large and bustling vendor area, and an optional lunch.
The society’s Speaker Series, held twice a year, in July and in October, offers an all-day genealogical event focused on a specific topic. Typically delivered by a nationally-known expert in the field, the Speaker Series event includes a series of lecture presentations on the event topic, as well as time for individual consulting with the presenter. Lunch is included in the program.
Salt Lake City Research Trip
Each year in November, society members have the opportunity to conduct their family history research in the world’s largest genealogical library—the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Guided by experienced tour leaders, each participant works independently on his or her research agenda. This research package includes seven nights of hotel lodging and on-site assistance by the group leaders.
Free to all, the Book Jamboree is a perfect opportunity to begin your holiday shopping. Local authors, groups, and book shop owners gather in our large front room to offer new and interesting genealogical and historical books, maps, CDs, and other related items.
The society’s Open House, the fourth Sunday of January, is a time to mingle with the many volunteers who keep the society going, to see first-hand what services are available in our office, to shop for new books or look for bargains at our Trading Post, and (generally) to be party to a surprise or two.
An annual fund raiser and a night of fun and fellowship. Annually held in March of every year at the Maryland Heights Community Centre. The questions are general knowledge questions, so get a group of friends together for an enjoyable night out and help the society in with its mission to educate and preserve our St. Louis heritage. The Society makes every effort to assure access to its events for those with special needs. If you have such a need, or have a question about this, please contact the society.
