4 Oct 1880 Injured: Annie Cribber, age 15, daughter of William Cribber - residing five miles west of St. Charles - was badly burned when her clothing caught fire while she was stirring a kettle of soap.
27 Apr 1880 Joseph Stetinus age 21 and Henry McIntyre drowned at the dock at Carondelet. Stetinus' mother lived at 2307 Olive; McIntyre was from Pennsylvania. Frank Wherry & William Stevens were rescued.
25 Aug 1880 Mrs. Margaret Corbitt obtained a peace warrant against her daughter-in-law, Mary Corbitt, living on Broadway between Webster & Chambers, because Mary has " many times threatened to kill her."
27 Jun 1880 Lizzie Studer, age 20, a German girl, committed suicide by drowning. "Her lover never came." Other family members mentioned were her father, brother, little sister Lillie, 2133 Franklin Ave.
3 Nov 1880 Agnes Andrews obtained a divorce from Joseph Andrews, whom she had married in New York in 1868. He was a photographer. She charged cruelty and obtained custody of their 9-year-old daughter.
5 Jul 1880 Henry Henschen, of 11th & Franklin, was attacked by Robert W. Mc Cormick and an unidentified man when he went to the home of his estranged wife, Lotta, 13th & Gay, to visit their daughter.
22 Jan 1880 Died: Hon. William W. Martin of Alton, Illinois. Born in Franklin, Venago Co., Pennsylvania. 11 August 1832; came to this area 1852; married Mrs. Emma Pickard 30 Jan. 1866. Four children.
27 Apr 1880 The body of Henry Boors was found hanging from a tree limb along the Meramec River by Willie, the 12-y-old son of Philip Hauck. Boors had lived in St. Louis before the death of his wife.
22 Sep 1880 Died: Thomas E. Boughton, husband of Lillie K. (nee Smith) at the home of Mrs. Bernard Smith, 2951 Dickson. Member of Knights of Pythias. Louisville KY & Springfield Ill & Va. pls copy.
11 Aug 1880 Died: Josephine Langelet, nee Winters, wife of Mark Langelet, a Deputy Constable, and mother of a little girl (Pauline) and an infant (Charlie) committed suicide for unknown reasons.
19 Nov 1880 Three election judges - Joseph Walsh, John J. Henze, and Hugh McGinniss - were indicted for refusing to receive the votes of colored men who were legally voters. ( 39th Pct. 4th Wd.)
17 Mar 1880 Charles W. J. Webb was arrested and charged with the seduction of a Miss Trout, but he agreed to marry her. He was a graduate of the St. Louis Medical School but worked as a barber.
7 Jan 1880 Coroner's inquest: James Miller and his mother, Mrs. Margaret Miller, killed by George Westenhoff. Witnesses, John Madden, Pat Scanlan, William Palmer, Mrs. Mary Westenhoff, mother.
20 Aug 1880 Died: Mrs. Maria Catherine Weber, an old inhabitant, age 84; born in Germany, mother of Mrs. Espenschied, grandmother of Mrs. Henry Overstolz, leaves "many near and dear relatives."
2 Apr 1880 Baby bigamist: Nannie, the 16-y-old daughter of blind Thomas Baker of Bridgeton, married Mr. King, a well-t-do farmer of Lincoln County; on 23 March she had married James H. Evans.
23 Oct 1880 Mrs. Lizzie Kelly "a handsomely attired young married woman" of 1512 Gratiot St. was in court charged with slandering Mary Murray, "another young wife." Mrs. Kelly was fined $25.
2 Jul 1880 William Jacobsohn and Robenia Wilson had the matrimonial knot tied by Justice Young; the bride was only 16 but was accompanied by her mother who gave permission for the marriage.
2 Jun 1880 Morris Fleak was granted a divorce from his wife Harriet, who refused to cook his meals. They were married in 1855 and had 10 children; he was a ships' carpenter on the Scudder.
19 Feb 1880 Widower's venture: Michael Stock of St. Louis married Eliza Foley, widow of New York., but they separated a short time later, allegedly because he had married her for her money.
4 Oct 1880 "The Western Light," an 8-page weekly, has made its first appearance. Edited by Mrs. E. J. Polk and Mrs. Annie T. Anderson, it is devoted to the advancement of female suffrage.
7 Sep 1880 A coroner's jury investigated the death of Joseph O'Brien, who died 6 Sept. ''of peritonitis resulting from a gunshot wound inflicted by a bullet fired by Sylvester Fitzwater."
22 Oct 1880 Catherine Murphy applied for a divorce from John; married in Dec.1879, separated Sept. 1880; he sold the furniture, locked up the house, and said she would never see him again.
8 Feb 1880 "A self-made man" - Harry James, a black waiter at the Lindell Hotel, born on a plantation in Virginia owned by Billy Henderson, fought in two wars, speaks several languages.
4 Jul 1880 Court notes: Caroline Eichholz asks for a divorce from her husband, Anton, on grounds of cruel treatment. They were married on the 31st of March and lived together 3 months.
8 Dec 1880 Died: Anna Isler, "our dear mother & mother-in-law" age 51. Signed by daughters Margareth Bernard, Anna Martin, Christina Isler, & sons-in-law Frank Martin & Steph. Bernard.
11 Jun 1880 Died: George T. Brown, brother of ex-mayor Joseph Brown, at the home of his sister, Mrs. J. R. Stanford, age 60y. Native of Scotland, resident of Alton, Illinois since 1834.
13 Nov 1880 Joseph J. and Clara Brady sued the city for $15,000 damages. Mrs. B. had stepped into a hole on the 12th St. bridge in Sept., 1879, and had been unable to use her arm since.
15 Mar 1880 Mr. And Mrs. Staunton celebrated their 50th anniversary at their home, 1425 Cass Ave. They were married in Jamestown Kentucky in 1830, came to St. Louis 1844. age 73 and 71.
9 Sep 1880 A lot of jewelry and female wearing apparel was found in the possession of Florence Kimball, a servant girl lately employed by W. F. Lamb; she was arrested and locked up.
10 Oct 1880 Died: Thomas J. Reader, father of George H. Reader and Mrs. John T. Roberts of St. Louis, in Centralia IL in his 71st year, of typhoid. Buffalo & Rochester NY, pls copy.

18 Mar 1880 Breach of promise suit: Christina Scheible (living on St. Charles Rock Road near Seven Mile House), age about 50, vs Louis Dieebel, who did not appear the day promised.
24 Aug 1880 Divorce cases: Mary Wolf has been married to Julius for 23 years and they have four children but he has become unfaithful and abuses her, "making her life intolerable."
18 Aug 1880 Belle Robertson and Kate Seymour had a fight yesterday morning at the corner of 8th & Biddle. Belle defended herself with a soda bottle and Kate fought with her fists.
3 May 1880 Died: Patrolman John J. Russell, age 42. Left wife, 3 children. He had helped search for the James boys and in 1877 was sent to Minnesota to help capture the Youngers.
24 Aug 1880 Divorce cases: Jean Carre, native of France, filed suit for divorce from Clementina, whom he married in the old country 17 Apr 1866. She refused to accompany him here.
9 Nov 1880 Julius, John and Thomas Selby, of Cape Girardeau, were charged with selling liquor without a license. So was Samuel Reding of Madison Co., & H. Pfeiffer, also of Cape.
18 Aug 1880 Laura C. Scott filed suit for divorce from George F. Scott, on the ground of desertion. They had three children: James G. age 13, Addie V. age 10 and Rebecca M. age 6.
7 Feb 1880 A bit of scandal, Kansas City, Missouri, involves Henry Gooch and a young blond Clara Wilson, of St. Louis. Clara was found in bed with Henry; result, divorce action.
29 Apr 1880 Died: Matilda Grenzer, age 11y; born in Germany, died in Venice Illinois, lived at 1510 Jackson. Daughter of Ferdinand. "1 1/2 years ago she swallowed a carpet tack."
2 Apr 1880 Courts: Edward D. Slater applied for divorce from his wife, Elizabeth B; they were married in Fulton County Illinois in Aug 1865, had four children, youngest age 3y.
21 Aug 1880 Died: Michael Furey, age 74. Funeral from home of his son-in-law, D. Johnston, 2624 Stoddard, to St. Bridget's. New Haven Connecticut. & Memphis Tennessee. Pls copy.
2 Jul 1880 George McDonnell, of Bellefontaine Rd. and Haarlem bridge, fell from a porch and sustained a compound fracture of his left arm. He is being attended by Dr. Lederle.
28 Nov 1880 H. Levin of St. Louis and Emma Witherell, daughter of Wm. H. H. Witherell (formerly of New Orleans) were married at the home of the bride's father in Evanston, Ill.
17 Feb 1880 There was a fire at the Gale House in St. Charles. Among those helping fight the fire were Henry Osthoff of St. Charles, C. L. Logan, and Eugene Hoke of Old Monroe.
11 Sep 1880 While celebrating his wedding Charles L. Lewis was arrested on the charge that he had sold a mule stolen from Thomas W. Johnson of Gasconade Co. to William Bishoff.
17 Jun 1880 Funeral of Gerard Crane, bortn in Elizabethtown, NJ in 1814; came to St. Louis 40 years ago; was with Gen. Sterling Price during the War; left wife and 5 children.
2 Sep 1880 Died: Sidney Johnstone Hall, son of O. E. Hall and Emily Mudge, born in New Orleans 6 April 1862, died 1 Sept. Will be buried at the family homestead in Illinois.
27 Mar 1880 John Rehsteiner commenced an action for divorce against his wife Elizabeth. (He had been married to Mary Bier in Greenville Ohio and she was Elizabeth Leutwiller)
1 Apr 1880 Anthony Zeller, "industrious and prominent" farmer of Sedalia, Missouri, murdered at a dance; accused are Nathan & Edward Shane, William Jaeger & Charles Baker.
5 Feb 1880 Married: Snowden Seargant & Miss Willich H. Roher, daughter of Hon. J. U. Roher, lately deceased, one of the oldest citizens of this city; in Oakland, Illinois.
27 Nov 1880 Robert C. Powell of Wheeling, West Va. And Cora Bellissime of Ste. Genevieve were married at the home of bride's parents in South St. Louis by Rev. Father Daly.
14 Aug 1880 C. F. Clifton Cook sued for divorce from Mollie A. Cook, whom he had married in Austin, Tex. In 1879 but she "fell into evil ways" and is beyond his restraint.
10 Dec 1880 Dr. Thomas O'Reilly asked for donations to a fund for the parents of police officer Walsh, killed in the line of duty. [Note: see Michael Walsh on 6 Dec 1880.]
15 Apr 1880 Mrs. Mary F. Fahey, a widow living at 715 S. 9th, was shot by one of her daughters, Kate and Mary; Mary, age 26, taught school. Two sons preceded her in death.
20 Feb 1880 Shawneetown, Illinois; Social scandal at the Riverside Hotel involving Mrs. May Greer, wife of a prominent merchant, and Mrs. Pankey, the lover of her husband.
26 Feb 1880 The courts: spicy case of Dr. J. W. Gully and Constable Fitzgerald; George F. Smith attorney; case involves attractive housekeeper Tillie Newman and her child.
4 Sep 1880 John H. Barnett filed suit for divorce from Rowena; they were married in 1879 (June) but she proved faithless and is associating with disreputable characters.
23 Feb 1880 Charles Lowenstein of East St. Louis was fatally stabbed by his brother-in-law James George. Lowenstein had married a widow, sister of James & Hayes George.
19 Sep 1880 Died: Anna Barbara Ratz, age 64y 8m 6d. Funeral from home of her son-in-law, G. E. Wetzel. Notice signed by Wetzel & wife and by Chris J. Spuehler and wife.
25 Nov 1880 Anton Norbag, a young Swedish musician, swore out a warrant against a saddler named John Sheridan, charging him with obtaining money under false pretenses.
23 Oct 1880 Richard E. Lewis of St. Louis and Elizabeth Hutchinson, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Hutchinson of Salisbury, Mo., were married in Salisbury on 20 October.
4 Sep 1880 Antonio Beretta, who has a fruit stand at 4th & Pine, sues for divorce from Louisa, who "eloped with an unknown man". They were married in Italy in 1870.
3 Feb 1880 Died: Almira Eoff, widow of the late Robert, at the home of her sister Mrs. H. Rashcoe, age 54y. She was the eldest daughter of the late Ezra Mundy, Esq.
10 Jun 1880 Henry Wenz seeks a divorce from his wife as her divorce from her first husband, Fred Dinkelman,was illegal. It took 6 years for him to find out about it.

23 Apr 1880 Edward Nugent, age 46y, will be hanged for shooting his wife on 20 Aug 1876, leaving children in Catholic orphanage. One daughter, Lizzie, on death bed.

28 Mar 1880 Casper Hizeman of Rushville, Illinois was killed by Eldred Morrell, his wife's brother-in-law. Morrell says Hizeman's wife planned the killing.
4 Apr 1880 Died: Mrs. Lucinda Forman, wife of Col. F. Forman of Vandalia, Illinois, at the home of her daughter Mrs. J. D. Peters in Stockton, California.
22 Oct 1880 Dutch Heiney, a newsboy, received a $5 gold piece from Mr. A. B. Cunningham as a prize for selling the most Hornets; Heiney had sold over 1300.
12 Jun 1880 John Gerard of South St. Louis, a German boy asge 15, is sought by his guardian John Winkleman; his parents live in Jefferson County, Missouri.
18 Feb 1880 The home of John Byerly, in Affton, was broken into by tramps, Mrs. Byerly fought with them, then made her escape to the home of William Hurst.
4 Feb 1880 St. Charles: Charles Riley was sent to the insane asylum, Justice A. Debertshauser of Cottleville was similarly affected but remained in jail.
27 Jan 1880 St. Louis County: Mrs. Henzie, Postmistress of Hog Hollow, relict of Fred Henzie, is booked for a wedding with Herman Schapter next Wednesday.
