Baumann Colonial Chapel Records
Arnold S. Baumann, a Swiss immigrant, moved to Creve Coeur in St. Louis County, Missouri, in 1882, where he opened a wagon making business. As his business flourished, he added a hardware store and undertaking services.
According to a history of the chapel published by the Shepard Funeral Chapel, which now owns the records, Arnold’s sons, Gus and John Baumann opened a funeral parlor on Woodson Road in Overland, Missouri, in 1923. John and his family remained with the business until 1935 after which Gus and his family ran the funeral home. In the 1940s, they expanded and air conditioned a new chapel and changed the name to Baumann Bros. Colonial Chapel. After Gus died in 1969, his widow, and some of her family continued running the funeral home until 1976, when she sold it to their embalmer, Don Jensen. Just before Mr. Jensen died in late 2013, he closed the Overland site and consolidated with the Shepard family whose funeral home on Natural Bridge Avenue in St. John, Missouri had existed at that location since 1963. Shepard’s Funeral Home now owns all existing records from Baumann’s.
